Providing Video on Demand using Over the Top - OTT Service

Adding or upgrading TV systems to offer video on demand services can be provided using an over the top – OTT service. Sarah Lum from Harmonic explained to me at the TelcoTV trade show that video on demand is an important revenue source for most carriers and some TV broadcast systems have limited ability to offer VOD service. This solution for TV broadcasters may involve a low cost upgrade to headed systems. An added benefit of using OTT for VOD service is the ability to offer multi-screen VOD (TV, PC, mobile, and others).

There are some key challenges for TV broadcasters who use OTT for VOD. These include bandwidth management, EPG integration, streaming servers, and OSS/BSS interfaces. The solution to these challenges is to use an integrated services management platform that is aware of the services and equipment and can configure the system accordingly and provide essential network and service information to the operator.
