Simple Ways to Develop TV Widgets
Television widgets (TV Widgets) are independent software applications that can be added to TV systems to provide new features and services. TV widgets offer new revenue generating opportunities for developers and broadcasters. A key challenge is how to develop TV Widgets, which types of televisions or set top boxes can they operate on, and how to test them. During the NAB show, Ron Jacoby from Yahoo! Connected TV explained to me that there are already 3 to 5 million TVs deployed that are capable of running TV Widgets. He stressed that TV Widgets should have an open platform that allows many companies to participate and share in development efforts. In addition to providing a free TV Widget software development kit, the Yahoo Connected TV system has been setup to allow the developer to test download of their widget on their own TV.
