Recommendation Engines – Smart Rules Lead to Better Results

Recommendation engines are critical to viewer navigation and TV broadcaster profitability as the number of available programs and available TV networks increase. At the IBC trade show, Tom Weiss from TV Genius explained that not all TV recommendation engines are the same. While the criteria used by recommendation engines typically includes viewing history, viewer preferences, and program metadata, a smart relevance map leads to much better recommendations. A relevance map helps to ensure that the viewing history for popular shows does not skew recommendation engines. A relevance map can also be used to integrate promotion programs into recommendation engines. For example, different promotions can be inserted into the navigation guides (such as targeted trailers) that better match viewer preferences.
