Multi-Codec Compression – Dynamically Selecting and Using the Best Media Codec
Making the wrong choice on coding systems and configurations can result in higher cost, lower quality, and lost customers for broadcasters. Steve Jones from Broadcast International explained to me at the IPTV World show that broadcasters can reduce their bandwidth needs by up to 75% by using a multi-codec media compression technology. To enable this process, Broadcast International developed the CodecSys open software architecture. The process involves analyzing each video stream, choosing an optimal codec from an available library, and selecting the best coded instantiation for a segment of video (frame or media sequence). The CodecSys continuously evaluates and optimizes each segment on a scene by scene basis. This provides the highest possible quality using the lowest possible bandwidth.
