A Unified Media Server – Converting One Source to Multiple Device and Screen Formats
The streaming server choice by broadcasters can determine which types of devices and formats they can provide. Dave Stubinvol from Wowza explained to me at the OTTCon show that it is becoming more critical for broadcasters to support many new types of devices and screen formats. To enable this, Wowza developed a unified media service that can be used for live and on-demand media streaming. The media server can convert H.264 content to multiple device and screen formats including Flash, Quicktime, and Silverlight, for desktop, set top boxes, and mobile devices. The media server can simultaneously convert to these formats. This allows for the reduction in the number of media servers and file formats that would be used for multiple formats. The media server also provides adaptive multi-bitrate streaming which can reduce the bandwidth and increase the overall quality of service for the user.
